Brundibar is an opera written in 1939 for children by Jewish-Czech composer, Hans Krasa. It first
premiered in Theresienstadt concentration camp, performed by the children interred there before being sent to Auschwitz.

It tells the story of two children, Pepicek and Aninka, who go into town to buy milk for their sick
mother, but have no money. They watch the organ-grinder, Brundibar, earn money by playing
music and sing to earn money themselves. They soon discover they are not loud enough for anyone to hear. Making friends with a cat, dog and sparrow, they gather all the children in the village to help them sing loudly enough that the townspeople hear them. They save their mother and drive Brundibar out of town.

It’s a story of friendship, perseverance and hope that is as important today as when first performed.
